Introduction: Learning Digital Transformation by Actually Doing It
Most business consultants learn about digital transformation from textbooks and case studies. I'm taking a different approach—I'm going back to school while simultaneously testing everything I learn on real Irish SMEs.
Why This Matters
I've spent 40 years building businesses. I took a medical manufacturing company from zero to €18 million. I've made the mistakes, hit the walls, and figured out what actually works when you're dealing with limited budgets, stretched teams, and operational chaos.
But here's the thing: the business world is changing faster than ever. AI isn't coming—it's here. Digital transformation isn't optional anymore. And most of the advice out there is either too academic (great theory, impossible to implement) or too Silicon Valley (assumes unlimited budgets and tech-savvy teams).
So on January 19th, 2026, I'm starting a Master's in Advanced Digital Technologies for Business with Digital4Business. Not to collect another certificate—to test whether academic frameworks actually work in the real world of Irish SMEs.
The Live Laboratory Approach
Here's what makes this different: I'm not studying in isolation. I have three Irish companies—spanning different sectors, different sizes, different challenges—who've agreed to be my testing ground.
Every framework I learn, I'll apply. Every tool we study, I'll test. Every theory we discuss, I'll validate against actual business chaos.
Then I'll write about it here. What worked. What didn't. And more importantly, why.
What You'll Get From This Series
Weekly Insights: I'll blog about the key topics covered each week in the program—AI integration, IoT applications, digital transformation frameworks, data analytics, whatever we're diving into.
Real-World Testing: You'll see how these concepts perform when applied to actual companies dealing with real constraints—limited budgets, legacy systems, resistant teams, operational fires that need fighting.
Honest Results: I'm not going to cherry-pick success stories. If something doesn't work, you'll hear about it. If a framework sounds great in theory but falls apart in practice, I'll tell you. If we discover a workaround that actually moves the needle, I'll share it.
Practical Frameworks: No academic fluff. If I share something, it's because it's been tested and it works for Irish SMEs operating in the real world.
Who This Is For
-
This series is for business owners and managers who are:
-
Drowning in operational chaos and wondering if "digital transformation" is real or just consultant-speak
-
Curious about AI but skeptical of the hype
-
Looking for practical, tested approaches rather than theoretical frameworks
-
Tired of advice designed for companies with unlimited budgets and dedicated IT teams
What's Coming
-
Over the coming months, you'll see posts on:
-
AI integration for SMEs (what actually works vs. what's oversold)
-
IoT applications in traditional industries
-
Digital transformation frameworks that survive contact with reality
-
Data analytics that drive decisions, not just dashboards
-
Change management when your team thinks "the old way works fine"
Each post will connect theory to practice, showing you not just what to do, but how to actually implement it.
A Challenge I'm Setting Myself
By the end of this Master's program, I want to demonstrate three things:
Academic frameworks can work—but only when properly adapted to SME constraints
Digital transformation is achievable—even for traditional Irish businesses without massive budgets
AI integration is practical—when you focus on solving real problems rather than chasing trends
I'll be documenting everything. The wins, the failures, the pivots, the surprises.
Let's Do This Together
This isn't just about my education—it's about creating a resource for Irish businesses navigating the same challenges. I'm bringing 40 years of practical experience to formal academic study, testing everything against real-world constraints, and sharing what actually works.
If you're interested in seeing how cutting-edge digital frameworks perform when they meet real business chaos, follow along. Subscribe to updates. Reach out if you want to discuss your own challenges.
Because the best way to learn digital transformation isn't from textbooks or case studies. It's by actually doing it—with real companies, real constraints, and real results.
Let's see what happens when theory meets practice.
Next in this series: I'll introduce the three companies participating in this live laboratory and the specific challenges we'll be tackling. Each represents a different type of operational chaos—and a different opportunity to test what actually works.
